- Currently available as the 4th (Sept 2005) edition, this book examines the criteria and symptoms of substance use, abuse and dependence including alcohol, amphetamines, opioids, cannabis-related disorders, antianxiety medications, sedative-hypnotics, hallucinogens, and inhalants. The numerous psychiatric, psychological and physical effects of the substances are discussed, including any resulting clinical psychiatric presentation. Throughout, there is reference to the effects of substances on the mentally ill population, plus the treatment options for special populations including the older adult and pregnant client. Discussed is the evaluation of substance use, including the diagnostic interview and mental status examination, plus examples of the various tests to determine the extent and severity of use and how they are used to assist in the evaluation.
- Treatment techniques are outlined from substance detoxification to inpatient versus outpatient detoxification and treatment, choosing medications to use during withdrawal, and the protocols used in detoxification and withdrawal. Treatment of the Concurrent Disorder is highlighted with specific techniques for those with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety and personality disorders. The book is written by Irene G. Ralph, R.P.N., the author of Psychotropic Agents and is edited by specialists in the field.
