Our Continuing Education Workshops and Training Seminars:

Tap into the knowledge of the author and publisher of the Psychotropic Agents Handbook and the Addictions and Mental Health Handbook.  These superior reference tools are used by the facilitator of the  workshops to increase your knowledge of medications used to treat mental health patients.

Depending on the workshop you attend your knowledge of current psychotropic agents will be up-to-date with the latest medications available for treating Mental Health Patients. You will become informed about what medications work best for which disorders - the side affects of the medications and dosages.

2nd Annual Richmond Hospital Department of Psychiatry Clinical Day
“The Realities of Emergency Psychiatry in Rural and Remote Communities: Strategies for Success”.

Presented by Terry Ralph, RPN, and Jane Hughes, RN, Acute Care Manager, Boundary Hospital, Grand Forks, BC, the presentation discusses how Community Mental Health Services, Hospital Acute Care Services and Physicians in a rural community can come together to develop strategies to provide quality and effective psychiatric care with limited access to specialist services and resources. Also discussed is the use of the Observation Unit and its benefits to the service providers.

This workshop is specifically geared to service provider organizations and agencies that are not familiar with Mental Health and Addictions Services, the population they serve and the services they provide. Where possible, local MHAS staff are asked to assist in the presentation to speak to issues relevant to the area. Presenters are Irene and Terry Ralph.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Practices Level II

Practice the hands-on use of the assessment models learned in Psychosocial Rehabilitation Theory (Level 1) and learn their application in a variety of mental health, geriatric and long term care facility settings. You must have taken PRS Theory (Level I) of the Mental Health Worker Program to enrol in the classroom PRS Practices. PSR includes 60 hrs. of practical and 21 hrs. of classroom time.

Simply Psychiatry Workshop (New)

Students will participate in reviewing and understanding the DSM IV TR diagnosis and the treatment of:

  • Mood Disorders including Major Depression, Bipolar I and II Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders including Generalized Anxiety, Panic and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
  • Psychotic Disorders including Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders
  • Personality disorders including Clusters A, B, C
  • Substances of Abuse

This workshop is targeted to nursing and other mental health professionals.

Mental Health and Addictions

This course is recommended for professional caregivers working in mental health, addictions or any setting which brings you into contact with clients dealing with both mental health and addictions issues. Content includes practical drug concepts; substance abuse and the addiction process; assessment; counseling; communications skills; groups, treatment planning, addictions and aging. Review current federal and provincial best practices in concurrent mental health and substance use disorders including current screening recommendations. (18 hours)
