This
comprehensive reference manual is now available as the 14th (2006)
Silver Anniversary Edition. In print since 1981, it has become a
popular reference text across Canada for Schools of Nursing,
Universities, and Colleges as a recommended text for students and a
teaching tool for instructors. It is also widely used by acute care
services, psychiatric units, community mental health services,
residential facilities, physicians, private counselors or any health
care provider in any setting where psychiatric medications are used.
The
author, Irene Ralph, is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with over 30
years experience in the Mental Health field. In addition to the
information she compiles for the book she has been assisted in editing
by a pharmacist and three psychiatrists, all prominent in their
profession. This latest edition is more comprehensive and inclusive
than previous editions, with 35 more pages of information. Written in
an easy to understand format, the manual contains information on the
major medication groups, their indication for use, potential side
effects, drug interactions, dosages and much more. The material also
provides information on the use of such medications in the older adult
population. The medication groups include antidepressants,
antipsychotics, antiparkinsonians, antimanic agents, and antianxiety
and sedative hypnotics. The text has numerous quick reference and
comparison charts with select Client Information Sheets that may be
reproduced for the client.
